At one time or another, we all have encountered computer virus attacks. We need to be aware that the world of computer viruses is constantly evolving. As computer security features become more advanced, the viruses that affect our computers also become more varied in nature and aggressive. Each year there are plenty of new computer viruses in the form of bots and malware that can potentially harm our machines and extract useful information from it. A “Bot” is malicious software or malware that is used to gain control of your computer, typically without your knowledge. Online criminals can use Bots to collect your personal and private data, such as Social Security numbers, bank account information, and credit card numbers by monitoring your keystrokes. This can lead to identity theft and fraud. A computer virus basically is a small piece of software that piggybacks on real programs or simulates others. They can be downloaded via the web, activated through email attachments or transferred through an external drive.
Some of the most common symptoms of an infected computer are:
- Your computer runs more slowly than normal
- Your computer stops responding or freezes often
- Your computer crashes and restarts on its own and then fails to run normally
- Applications on your computer don’t work correctly
- You see unusual error messages
What you should do:
First, know what virus protection you are running. In a number of cases a fake alert will prompt you to take action. When you click on the message you are in fact downloading the program.
Update your virus protection or have it update automatically.
Check your virus logs to see what is happening. This is a good indication of what’s going on behind the scenes.
Use multiple anti-virus/anti-malware protection programs.
AVG 2015 and Malwarebytes are excellent free choices to guard agaist common viruses and malware. Comcast includes Norton Anti-virus with subscription to internet service, and Verizon offers McAfee for a minimal charge per month.
